shercoben12
hi all, been out on bike after having it being sent of for a service, its come back and ive ridden it and the fan never comes on and also it got so hot that it was bubbling and throwing mist out of the top of radiator. thats when i noticed the fan wasnt working and also the lights on front, and on the rear mudguard where not working. got a friend round who is a good mechanic and he has done a couple of gassers. the two wires in the grey coating coming from the stator up to the electrics where tested for current. the yellow wire which is for all the power for the fan and lights etc was dead. absolutely nothing. he said the stator needs to be rebuilt or new one needed, has anyone got a second opinion on this? could it just be the wire is broken? the bike is only 7 months old so would be a shame if stator had gone cheers
lineaway
Very strange if it was just in a shop. What kind of work was done. I`d double check the connections, specifically the grounds.
shercoben12
i dont seem to recall the fan coming on much before though and it also put a tiny bit of steam out before. no electrical work other than kill switch re wired in. theres no current coming up the yellow wire! steve_earle
Is this the bike you said was knocking a few weeks ago and you thought you needed a piston? Could be linked to this problem. Remove the flywheel and trace where the yellow wire joins the stator coil then use a multimeter to see if there is a break in the wire. Bradford ignitions could repair the stator if it's at fault. Also check the yellow wire is not shorting to ground anywhere, Check the wire with the rectifier and regulator unplugged. aussiechris
As Steve said - check with regulator and rectifier unplugged. But don't forget - the 12 volts at the yellow wire is AC. Make sure your multimeter is set to AC otherwise it will read zero. If you disconnect the regulator, the voltage on the yellow wire should go quite high (maybe up to 75 volts when you rev it). It's difficult to check for a short (to ground) because the stator winding should only read about 0.1 to 0.2 ohms to ground anyway. So it would normally look like it's shorted. Most multimeter leads will have that sort of resistance themselves so it's not easy to check. Check all the grounds are connected and clean. I remember a mate wired in a new kill switch on his brand new Montesa once and after a short ride it looked like "Puffing Billy" (the steam train) as the fan wasn't running because he'd managed to disconnect one of the earth lugs. Good luck with it.
