duncan36
However I think that the GG brand is too small, china products are most of the time very big volumes (could grow offcoarse, but trial market is not that big especially in home country and developing, which is most of the time their aim) They aren't always about large volumes. They have started to manufacture miniature jet turbines for model aircraft and they are sold in fair fewer numbers than Trials bikes i would have thought. A few years ago their tolerances weren't good enough to make it viable, but their engineering skills have soon caught up and they are producing some really good stuff. Obviously its a bit more costly to ship a trials bike, but i doubt that would put them off.
atomant
I have no idea why people think that China is only interested in large volumes these days? In the early days of Chinese imports into the West, it was the larger companies with the resources who could forge the way. These days with Alibaba.com , there are small companies selling everything and they are starting to ship in smaller numbers too and the price difference in a lot of cases is unbelievable compared to European prices. The long term economics for European countries will no doubt be negatively affected by this but that's another thread on its own ...

fulltilt
My first Modern' Trials bike was a 1996 Gas Gas 250. After 9 years of cruel and unusual punishment, I had to replace the con-rod and bearing. I threw in a new piston for good measure. Had to jump 3 sizes to fit the cylinder. All the parts were in stock! $1500 bucks later, it was like new again and I sold it for $1800. I should have kept it. I never saw a bike take so much abuse. Broken off foot-peg mounts, 3 sets of pegs, multiple levers, perches, frame cracks, exhaust flattened, broken kick start lever, destroyed rear rim, 2 broken brake rotors, uncountable brake pads, tires, 3 handlebars, suspension bearings, rear shock, fork-seals, suspension linkage, heim joint, muffler welded, several grips, clutch discs, shift detent springs, and more. I wish I had a dollar for every time I literally threw that bike completely over my head landing it behind me! I can't say I like the new Gasers as much, but that bike took a lickin and kept on tickin'!
nigel dabster
Pokey! Nooooooo! Hey when you can go for several years without replacing a gearbox or two you have money for fenders and stator rewinds.

dadof2
Probably going to shock ND with following statement. For the most part Gassers are (were) pretty well made with very good quality materials and the pre Pro bikes as evidenced by fulltilt's 1996 example, were very robust. If anything the photos show lack of or poor quality lubricants. The pros also were on the whole pretty well made of good quality materials. Unfortunately some areas of the Pros were deigned too close to the limit to give satisfactory longer term reliability for quite a number of riders. This reduced sales but unless anyone has clear evidence to the contrary I doubt it reduced sales enough to have a major impact on GGs financial position. Irrespective of what is going on at GG (anyone actually know?) I suspect with every day that passes a return to manufacturing will be harder, and because of JTS and Vertigo the justification for re starting manufacture of GG will be less. I remember a successful specialist metal forming business that had been established in the UK by quite an entrepreneurial graduate in the late 1960s. Some time in the mid 1980s the company was sold to a much larger company based in the USA. By the late 1980s bad management had brought the UK plant to its knees. A few workers moved to other parts of the parent company but most chose redundancy. At a stroke a highly skilled built up over 20+ years was destroyed. Within a month or two the employees had found different jobs and the equipment dispersed. Because of the destruction of the skills base it would then have been impossible to restart the business and the cost of buying new production equipment would have been prohibitive. nigel dabster
Dadoff says "I suspect with every day that passes a return to manufacturing will be harder, and because of JTS and Vertigo the justification for re starting manufacture of GG will be less" JTS? Not another new catalan maque? Dad off try to absorb a minimum of info, but just so its easy for you and your lack of understanding is nt so obvious next time :- Gas Gas make very little, most components are bought in from subbies in the area. So you or I with the original buyer (from GG) could set up gas gas operation tomorrow and get it running in a very short time. I hope this is what happens sooner rather than later..... timp
I would imagine that in a couple of months they could be selling bikes again. Totally different scenario assembling bought in components to actually manufacturing those components. It's a good bike with a good reputation so will be a very attractive purchase to the right person.
