elliotsdaddy Posted April 15, 2015 Report Share Posted April 15, 2015 Morning all....or afternoon/evening depending on where you are. Popped out on the bike for an hour yesterday. After I started it I selected 2nd gear and went to pull away as normal and when I slowly released the clutch it started to move backwards like I had selected a reverse gear. It was really weird 'cause that was the last thing I was expecting it to do. After selecting 1st and then 2nd again all was well, but I was curious if anyone else has experienced this, and if anyone knows as to why it might have happened? I'm curious. faussy Posted April 15, 2015 Report Share Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Just to expand on what has "most likely" happened. Your ignition timing has somehow moved and advanced itself, hence when you try to start it,the engine fires and runs backwards. Has the bike been kicking back lately? Why it has moved... if you haven't been working at it yourself, the most likely cause would be the woodruff key shearing (as stated above) and the flywheel moving on the crankshaft. Thanks in advance, Chris. Did you start the engine between the forward and rearward motion? Otherwise it's something else than the ignition timing... t-shock 250 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Share Posted April 15, 2015 Assuming you have a 2007 sherco, these are notorious for dodgy stators, one possible early symptom is variable timing. It sounds a bit beyond me his whole ignition timing thing so might be best to get it to someone who knows their stuff. Can I still use it until I get it fixed or will I be doing more damage? sirdabalot Posted April 16, 2015 Report Share Posted April 16, 2015 Ive seen this happen on other 2 strokes. I was in a van at traffic lights, there was an MZ motorbike in front, when the lights changed to green he tried to ride away but stalled. He restarted the bike, revved it up and accelerated backwards into the front of my van. His back mudguard and lights were damaged but he was ok. Here we go I thought, that's me stuffed, who's going to believe this, i'll be blamed for crashing into him. I would avoid using it, you'll be putting unnecessary strain on the big end and conrod Did you start the engine between the forward and rearward motion? Otherwise it's something else than the ignition timing...
