Hi all.

Geoff is the name and Beta Rev3 250 (circa 2002) is the bike..

 

The Beta was a shed when I got it (my mate bought it unseen as a surprise.. yay cheers for the work I have to now do) and is now In much better fettle.

swing arm bearings had disintegrated, both brake calipers and master cylinders where seized.  had fun bleeding the rear brake.. its sprung a leak and needs doing again which I am putting off until last as I hated the bike for a while when I did it the first time.. Head bearing were dry and shot, replaced.  various plastics missing or damaged. 

The air filter looked to be years old..

Clutch is weird and grabby, that can't be right on a trials bike surely, with the finesse needed for some manoeuvres?

 

First question:

1.  I have had many 2 strokes but this one rattles and knocks, sounds like its pinking.  I am told its normal?? What do any of the beta owners have to say about that?

2.  After the last use it was put away.. it now has no spark... I know its Italian but ?????  Reading forums its likely the stator but I am struggling to get a wiring diagram so I know what goes where.

I have basic electrical knowledge and a basic multimeter. Are there some proper tests I can do?

Yellow, red, brown, white a B/W terminate at the stator, black comes out of the connector and terminates in a spade connector and does not go to the stator.

Both brown and yellow are ‘grounded’, by that I mean I have continuity if I test between the connector and the body or coil pickups. little or no resistance

Both white and B/W are also ‘grounded’ but show some resistance. .200 when set to the 2k Ohms settings from wire to stator and .400 between the 2 wires.

red I get nothing, it could be broken but I don't want to strip the rubber tubing away just yet.

 

I have attached a pic, anyone able to tell me what year it is.. ignore the decals as I put them on it.

Looks like it had some stator work before. I`m guessing a 2001. The 2002 air filter was under the seat. I cannot remember the stator readings, but I would double check the grounds and kill switch first. Good luck.

The coil in the yellow wrapper at about one O'cloch is the ignition source coil. Find the two wires that come off this, resistance should be 200 to 250 ohms.

 

The best way to check this coil is (with flywheel on) spin the engine with a power drill or push it in a low gear. With the spark plug out and the source coil wires disconnected they should show 25 V ac or more.

Yeah the '08 graphics threw me. There are three coils that are part of the ignition. The yellow one powers the CDI and provides the primary current to charge the capacitor. The two small coils on either side are trigger and sense coils that tell the CDI when to fire and how much advance to use. These are wound with very thin wire and are typically what goes out on these ignitions. I fought with one of these for months before finally admitting it was probably bad. I'd advise just pulling the stator and sending it to a rewind shop for testing and probably repair.

Beta's do pink and bang a lot on normal octane 95 fuel.

I think Beta's Handbooks state to use 98.

 

My old 2001 was worse, it barked an awful predentonation "bang" like the big end was failing every now and then and had an angry grating rattle on the over run on 95, but ran very smoothly on 98.

 

My 2007 was slightly better, but I'd learnt by then and I also binned the Mikuni for a Delorto VHST.

 

Nothing but Tesco's finest 99 Momentum for my Evo now.

 

Methinks the 2001 had, as mentioned the airbox cover on the left hand side instead of through a flap in the seat.

I also seem to think the switch for the fan was fitted to the top of the radiator on a 2001 and from 2002 onwards, it was fitted to the bottom.

The 2000 and 2001 air filter was accessed from the left hand side behind a cover located that looks like this.

The chain tension block is on upside down.
