Sparky Plug!

BP5ES is the most common plug for liquid trials bikes ridden normally (not hard)

An iridium plug (more expensive) will in theory make it start easier and run better but you probably will not notice the difference.

A correctly set up bike should work fine on a BP5ES

Ok just ordered a lithium battery for the 9v easy start, got iridium plug coming as well....

I know you have had a Ossa for a while (Canada280) do you have any tips on starting technique ? i've had loads of different advice but still not great on firing up!!

Been out Sat/Sun and last night, bike is mega, prob best trials bike i have ever ridden, but the starting is a bit of an achilles heel....!!  :wall:   :suicide:

Regards,

Ian

I know people who have no problem starting at all, unfortunately as I have admitted in the past, my technique is crap so I still have issues, especially when I am tired! My best advice is ti always try to start it when standing on the pegs leaning against a tree or something. I then get the starter to the top of the stroke and give a good firm kick through. With the latest mapping my bike is 2-3 kicks from cold using this method and first kick when warm. I have seen people "snatch at the starter which also seems to work, just not for me. Is your mapping up to date?

Its well strange!!! kicking it up with all sorts of different ways, sometimes its so dead it seems like it will never go again...!!! then suddenly sparks into life like a rocket!!! no rhyme or reason  ?? ive had it fire 1st kick, (once) 3rd 4th 12th 30th etc...LOL

When warm/hot makes it no better, in fact prob worse.

Does the fuel pump need to make a noise with the easy start depressed?

Can i use a bigger voltage battery? how about a truck one....!!! LOL... :D  :P

Just to clarify, when you are kicking it over you are holding down the easy start button right? Not just pressing it and letting go before you kick it. You have to keep it pressed to charge the system, then when you move the kickstart into position you should hear it prime the pump, maybe not the spfirst kick but certainly on subsequent kicks, every time, especially if using a high power lithium battery. If still having issues I would definitely get it checked for TPS and idle which should be 5 degrees and approx 1400rpm or a little lower if you prefer

Thanks 280, I've had a lot of conflicting advise about the starting, 9v system etc, one dealer said hold for 3/4 seconds then 2 kicks to prime them a good one to start...I've held button down all time as well, no difference, never ever hear fuel pump priming with switch, or anything, when first got it a did once then never heard again, it did come with a shrink packed Aa type pack, but as it never worked again I thought they maybe faulty, so swapped to square 9v battery. Dealer wired in after consulting with Nigel Burkett, so must be wired ok?

3/4second is the new easy start, 2014 onwards. 2013 and earlier use the 9v system which is basically the same principle, purpose being to per gargle the electrical system for easier starting. As per my post in the other string, check for spark by removing the plug as you have changed the plug cap
