laird387
Hi, Here's some questions for your next club quiz night - is the DMW a British trials bike - and where was it made - and who designed it - and what was special about the frame - and was the designer only the second rider to win every class cup in the SSDT - and what was the Coronation Cup in the SSDT ..................... But to know the answers you'll have to get yourself a copy of ORRe-24 - which will be on-line soon now............... Enjoy - in the meantime, here's a picture for you to enjoy

laird387
They were made in sedgley (Dudley) about 1/2mile from my house Founded by Leslie Dawson who designed / invented swinging arm suspension Hi Paul, Sorry, Leslie Dawson was the businessman who owned/ran the engineering works - I am confident that he didn't design or invent the swinging arm suspension - that was down to another local lad................ Cheers Deryk (CORRECTION: 10 June. The patent on the swinging arm suspension was, as was usual in small engineering companies, issued in the name of the owner of the business, even though the actual development, etc., is likely to have been done in the various departments of the business. I am convinced that the historical facts are that Mike Riley (who had ridden BSA machinery before the war but was employed, and rode, Levis machines subsequently) had more to do with the development of the 1947 245cc DMW that he rode in the first post-war SSDT, as my research into the history of the SSDT established. The development into the Metal Profiles element of the business is for another time. Hope that is of interest. suzuki250
Mr Dawson did develop the swing arm. was an avid rider & inventor as well as a business man I do believe he did call it Dawson Motor works, but it does say on the sign Dawson Motorcycles W’ton Ltd See attached link: http://www.historywebsite.co.uk/Museum/Transport/Motorcycles/DMWintoproduction.htm I remember the factory well
charlie prescott
Hi Guy's. Did the frames not be made from square section erw, tube?on some models.? The rider in the picture is Bill Price one of the Price brothers,(Mac was the other.) and rode the DMW more than his brother, Bill is more famous for riding a Triumph Cub by the name of "Black Bess" And both brothers own and drive Austin Ruby salons! Bill did a fair bit of unpaid development for Triumph ,if my memory serves me right? He was the guy always on a different version of the TR20 Cub at most of the Midland Centre events at the time ,early sixties. Regards Charlie. tony283
This is my DMW which had the fuel in the top tube, square section swinging arm and Hagon gas shocks, and the original seat. Up front I fitted an Ossa MAR front end and a TY250A engine and rear wheel. Tony
charlie prescott
Hi Guy's. 20 frames like the one above of Tony's. from DMW were bought by the Frazer Honda concern from Redditch UK. And used with several different Honda engines and forks etc fitted. The story that Deryk is about to tell in ORR-e about the construction of the frames should be interesting. Regards Charlie. outlaw dave
Love to hear these old stories, a buddy of mine had a DMW, which had a square tubed frame, his name was Glyn Richards from Whittington, near Oswestry.
