shedracer
Hi, i am getting very near to the completion of my RTL rebuild, however I am struggling to get a part to replace a damaged one. The AC Generator cable, that come out of the engine generator cover (seen in the attached photos), it has a small rubber elbow grommet, which is in very poor shape. Does anybody know if this rubber grommet can be replaced, or have any suggestions for an alternative, or to repair it? I would very greatfull for any suggestions. Many thanks. bibbo
You'll probably find that this grommet is a 'general' Honda part used on various bikes (both road & off-road) and is not specific to the RTL. Speak to a Honda specialist (probably not a Honda dealer who will only look up specific part numbers) and they might recognise it from the pictures and suggest which other models have it, and therefore what the part numer is. Maybe someone like David Silver spares would be able to help?. Edited July 1, 2015 by bibbo
andywalker
I looked into replacing this on my bike while i was on rebuilding it and the feedback i got was that it came as part of the generator assembly and was not available on its own.,
shedracer
I have been in touch with David Silver parts, it is a complete assembly, ie you've had to buy the whole generator assembly, and they are no longer available, sadly. I'm currently looking at a product called VersiMold, which is a mouldable silicon rubber, which cures when heated. The only thing I'm not to sure is if it can handle the engine temperatures, but I have sent a question to the company that makes it. If it proves to be to handle the heat and oil contact, then it will be ideal to mold into the engine case and around the wires, finger crossed. bibbo
How about a bike breakers who might have a few mid-80's period Honda's. You could take a look and see if any of them have something like this grommet fitted.
lsv
Not original I know, but my solution to this problem.

shedracer
You may be able to make a replica yourself, have a look here; https://sugru.com/about That looks very similar to the VersiMold. Hopefully one of these product will suitable, waiting on replies from both of them, on the suitability for engine, heat and oil contact. bashplate
if it's silicon it will be up to the heat no problem......silicon gasket and silicon baking trays stand realy hot temps, so a wee doobery on the outside of your casing will be a doddle. Question is, will it stand upto oil. Haven't had a reply from either company yet.
andywalker
Mine leaked oil out of the grommet, i tried silicone sealant on the outside but the oil still found a way through, i eventually sorted it by taking the casing off and fully degreasing it inside and out then applying the sealant on the inside around the grommet, did that over a year ago, the bike gets used regularly, so far its been spot on.
joelewis
As above, I took the casing of, degreased it then put Ducati sealant (I had that kicking around) on the inside. I did that around 6 months ago, I've done 6 ish trials on it and no problems since.
