sean65
I am looking at getting my first trials and plan to go and look at a GasGas 280txt and 270txt over the weekend. The latter has been rebuilt and is a 1999 example which seems very straight. The former is a 2002 model and again seems very clean. Similar money, so is there really a better option of the two or would the forum consider them much of a muchness. Thanks
petert
The 280 being a 2002 could be an early Pro model with a later type engine, however the early pros suffered with electrical problems. Not the end of the world but worth bearing in mind.
sean65
That suggests that you think the 280 is a better option than the 270 because it is more up to date, or is it really a case of pay your money and take your choice.
petert
I own a 2009 280 so may be biased slightly! Owned a 300 before and much prefer the 280. The engine hasn't changed a huge amount from the 2002 pro to date. Both of the above will need rear linkage checking for play. Personally I would go for the 2002 if a pro and in good condition as it is a more modern bike all round.
sean65
Hopefully I am off to look at the 280 tomorrow and 270 Sunday. Anything I should specifically look at. Edited July 3, 2015 by sean65
sean65
It is the pro
crazybond700
Many people will not recommend to buy a 2002 pro, and i would agree. Buy a newer pro, or an edition or so (old engine)/ The older bikes are very good, but a different style of engine etc.
sean65
Had a look at both today. Both seem pretty straight. 270 has had engine rebuild new discs but has some play in the front bearing. 280 again seems straight and well looked after. Both started first kick with not trouble. For very similar money, would the newer bike not be a better option really?
crazybond700
Search this forum on gas gas pro 2002, and decide yourself
sean65
I see your point, although by now surely most things would have been fixed or modified. Are you suggesting the 270 of the 2? Front bearings an easy job?
huski
The 02 would be lighter, more powerful and manoeuvrable, but the pro wasn't really sorted till 04.Theyre both old bikes, the 270 with a rebuilt engine would be a wiser buy Front wheel bearings are a cheap and easy fix
sean65
I am beginning to think that myself. The 280 is only 3 miles away and the 270, 40 miles, but both will go in the back of the Discovery. Would the 280 not have been sorted in its 13 years history by now though, or expired if it was a bad example. The be honest as a total beginner, I probably wouldn't tell the difference. totty79
The 99 is a fairly heavy bike, feels ok to ride but it soon wears you out when you've got to drag it. I had a 99 321 and switched to a Beta evo. I'd take my chances on the 02 or keep looking.
sean65
It seems it might be a 2001. So would this mean it's not a pro. How can one tell? Would a photo confirm?
cbutler
The Pro has the clutch line mounted to the clutch cover on the right side of the bike. The Edition has it mounted on the left side just in front of the sprocket. Pics are good but this is better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0IAIDUZafY Edited July 7, 2015 by cbutler
