Hi guys new to the forum, so i have a txt r 280 2013 i bought the bike about 4 months ago it's my fourth bike i ride quite often, I've changed the air filter the plug and the gearbox oil, i changed the gear box oil the other day before a trial too. I'm not that great with mechanics if I'm honest and I'm just wondering how often i need to change the oil and plug etc, I'm guessing keep an eye in the filter and clean when it starts to get fairly dirty? can anyone also advise me on any other things i should look out for? i always take the bike to my local guru when anything major needs doing but i'd like to be a bit more self catering! thanks in advance! oh and by the way how would i know when i need new chain and sprockets lol?

Hi Rocks and welcome,

With gearbox oil, I just keep an eye on the colour. Mine starts out a light red colour and I change it when I notice it becoming a dark red in the window and that is about every two to three months riding once a week.

Air filter, like you I clean it when it's dirty enough that I can't see the little pores in the foam and I always clean it just before a competition. And I clean the plug at the same time (still on the same iridium plug for almost four years).

I also change coolant, brake and clutch fluids, and fork oil once a year. Clean and lube the throttle tube every few rides.

You probably should dismantle and re-grease the rear suspension linkage unless you know it's been done recently. Do a search of this forum for details.

Your chain and sprockets need replacing when you can see a noticeable "hook" in the sprocket teeth (usually on the front one first).

aussie chris has covered it pretty much but heres my say, change gear oil every 12-15 hours of riding and i would do the airfilter on hours ridden too, not by looking at it because the filter will pick up dust too which is not always visible. clean it after a couple of dusty day rides, or if you are ridng in wet and muddy conditions clean it on what it looks like.   plugs seem to last ages on these so thats not a problem, although it will get clogged more easier if you dont clean you airfilter because the bike will run rich.  being a fairly recent bike most fluids in brakes etc should be alright.  as for chain and sprockets, we have a bike with rear and front sprockets that have less than 1/3 of the original tooth left they are so hooked. still dont see why i should change them because its working perfectly fine with out a single problem or slip. when it starts to jump or slip i will change but dont need to at the moment! getting my moneys worth lol ;)

Thanks guy's you've both be really helpful i just remember my old rev 3 when i was younger that i rode for 18 months with out doing a single thing and it was fine, but i'd rather not do that with my new pride and joy haha. But you really have cleared up a few issues for me!
