Pre-65 Scrambles

Hi,

Just a little reminder that our digital magazine, OFFROADREVUe (ORRe) deals with all offroad sport, not just trials, and there are many memories of scrambling in the old days as well as from the rejuvenated world of Pre-65 Motocross in recent issues.

Here, for example is an image from issue 28 which is currently in preparation.

A quiet August was enlivened by a second North Devon (Atlantic) meeting at Berrynarbor, in glorious weather. Guy Winsor in classic action on his Cheney JAWA, went on to clinch the class later in the year at Wiscombe Park, in the 2000 British Championship.

Deryk, I appreciate this a long shot, but do you have any photo's of any old scrambles at the Teversal track at Pleasley near Mansfield?

My dad used to take me there as a kid when he wasn't trialling. I remember seeing a Husqvarna for the first time there, the noise it made stays with me to this day.

I know some of the races were televised on one of the Saturday afternoon sports shows.

As were the Cadwell Park scrambles, I believe.

Hi spen,

Yes, there are Teversal images in the archive, bundles of old negative packs that I still have to find time, somehow, to clean up and scan so that we can use them digitally and yes, I was at the Cadwell Park scrambles 'cos the TV mob wanted to have riders waiting on the line ready to 'go' when they got the TV time slot - I was in the mobile radio business in those days - no mobile 'phones then - so the clubs persuaded me to lend them my demonstration kit so they could have travelling marshals all linked by radio to check there were no problems still out on the track before they let the race start.........

The riders used to hate the TV scrambles, 'cos they were winter time and it used to be scrambles in the summer, trials in the winter way back then!  Add to that they were lined up ready to go and could sit and freeze on the start line for ten minutes or more - then be expected to 'race' at full speed..........

None the less - happy days.

When I have collected some images together, I'll do a feature in ORRe.

Superb, thanks. Look at all that protective gear...... oh for the days of a rugby shirt, goggles, helmet, jeans et al. My son in law is a 'crosser, he looks like an explosion in a paint factory crossed with a fishing float and is about 20% bigger with all his padding. Bloody 'crosser, it's scrambling.
