laird387
Hi, The news came through this week that MARCUS ADAMS, a prime mover of my own first motorcycle club, West Leeds, who has reported all of West Leeds events for the local newspapers, as well as feeding information to the likes of the late Matt Shelley who passed it on, where appropriate, to the national newspapers and to Barry Robinson, the regional photojournalist who provided motorcycle sports information for Harry Louis and Norman Sharpe, the editors of the Motor Cycle and Motorcycling (commonly known as the Blue 'un and the Green 'un), has decided the time has come to retire his trusty typewriter - and/or reporter's notebook. Many years ago Marcus received a small token fee for his efforts - but some years ago that was dropped, so Marcus carried on free, gratis and for nothing, just to make sure the reports and results, etc., were available for the public. But gradually the interest of the local newspapers declined, the only sports reports they seemed interested in were those that involved highly paid professionals kicking or throwing balls about, and now not even the Yorkshire Post newspapers are interested in publishing other sports reports - sad when you realise that West Leeds well known trials ground, Post Hill, was so named after being utilised for a popular series of freak hill climbs in the 1930s, the hill being a mind-blowing 1:1.4 for the top fifty yards sponsored by - and fully supported by - Yorkshire Post Newspapers.............. Marcus, well into his late eighties and not in the best of health, deserves a medal for the way he has promoted motorcycle sport over so many years - a true enthusiast of the old school.
