tonyp
Hi, I took the head/barrel off my 2004 Rev3 today...... - No discernible up/down movement in small end or big end. - But I could rock the conrod to & fro a bit... this wasn't just sideways movement on the crankpin Do you think the big end is worn ? How tolerant are Rev3's to a bit of wear ? I'm OK running with a worn engine, just wondered if it's going to blow-up big time in the near future? TonyP. sirdabalot
Was the engine noisy or vibrating more than usual before dismantling?
tonyp
There has been no real step-change in noise, vibration , and performance. It continues to perform OK, but I'd just like to get an indication of life expectancy.
copemech
No up/ down is all that matters really! The rest will move.
sirdabalot
Agree with copemech. Big end failures I've known about have gave a bit of warning with noise/vibration, noticeable enough to raise concern. dadof2
For peace of mind I would get a second opinion from an experienced mechanic or measure con rod movement by a specified method. Depends how much use your bike has had and what sort of use / care but 2004 big end could be getting a bit tired. Any doubt and it may be better to replace it and the mains. Even if big end does not fail suddenly bits of bearing cage can break off and wreck piston, barrel and head.
lineaway
The question would be why you took it apart?
