hgas
Thinking of getting my crankcases resprayed (factory replica magnesium gold flaking off everywhere) any one done this before and what did it cost them roughly? could I just take them to a local spray shop ?? sirdabalot
I've read horror stories about stripping and repainting magnesium. Do a search.
dadof2
Get them lightly sand blasted (fine sand) or bead blasted then paint with VHT primer then VHT gold engine enamel or don't use primer and just paint with Hammerite smooth gold. Two coats of hammerite sprayed on at the correct interval give a very tough finish that helps seal out corrosion. It may be worth contacting an auto paint specialist. Etch primer followed by 2 pack high build undercoat / primer gives very good corrosion protection on alloy wheels and steel but I have never used it on magnesium engine casings. You would then have to spray on the colour or basescoat + gloss Edited October 18, 2015 by dadof2
biffsgasgas
I'm going to be respraying my cases this year. Magnesium isn't too hard to paint but I would stay away away from any etching effect. Magnesium takes to that poorly. I was a body guy (icar certified) before I left my last dealer. 2 part epoxy is where it's at but keeping the corosion at bay before the respray is going to be dificult. --Biff Edited October 19, 2015 by biffsgasgas

brownie001
How many ways are there to skin a cat ? I have been told that if you Dow 9 the parts first, that's a galvanic process also known as chromating, you can virtually paint the parts with anything. I'm going to get in touch with the engine manufacturer, Rotax (Bombardier) in my case, and see what they have to say.
