laird387 Posted November 12, 2015 Report Share Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) The start of a Richmond (Yorks) trial at Wensley Bridge in 1988, where close on NINETY outfits were in action, a few in this shot of the start area, from the archive by Barry Robinson reminded us, once again, how different the scene is today - well if you talk to a few crews I'm sure that you will find there is a general feeling that there is very scant publicity in the form of press coverage. Well, we can make a change there - starting with the riders with some of the older traditional outfits - if you enter quite a few of the classic trials like the Sammy Miller rounds and the Talmag, then we will definitely include as many sidecar images in our ORRe Photoreports as we can fit in. Hi, When Barry Robinson says it was 1988 he does so because of retrieving the negative from a file with negative strips, programme, results sheet and copies of the report he filed in the various papers that he worked for. That was over a quarter of a century ago and back in those days the whole motoring scene in the UK was somewhat different, the tendency to change cars so readily just did not exist, working people tended to drive vehicles somewhat older than anything seen on the roads these days. The only New vehicle I have owned was a 405 pick up.and that was owned by the company. The decline in Classic outfits I think is down to the sections again now being to tight and a lot dangerous, some of the downhill sections I have seen, would put anyone off competing. If you remember trials like the Sam Seston used to have well over a hundred outfits, and although some sections were difficult there was never more than one that was unridable with a big outfit. Same old story? sections set for the top trick riders on lightweights, and then these type of sections are in the head of the setters out even in say the Sammy series. where the only few pre-unit outfits now compete. micm Posted November 13, 2015 Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 The gent leaning on the Transit (centre left) might be wearing the top 70s trials outfit, the snazzy two tone plastic suit by TT leathers, maybe red or green with white sleeves (class!), and he's sporting a Zapata style 'tash I reckon. And, (foreground left towing trailer) were there any functioning Austin Maxis left in 1988? So it looks more Eagles' than Guns n Roses to me.
