New Scottish Classic Trials Championship.

The existing format of running the Pre 65 and Twin Shock Championships in tandem with modern bikes, has not been as successfull as I'm sure everyone would have hoped.

Is it time for a new approach ? Maybe a stand alone Championship catering predominantly for them, run along similar line to the very successful Kia Championship. (We would have to be careful not to clash to maximise the entry.)

The problem with the existing format, as I interpretat it, is too many potential riders have to make a choice between championships, and also it is very difficult to lay out suitable multi route sections.

The huge success of dedicated events like the Highland 2 Day and Pre65 Scottish clearly shows there is a demand, why not expand and capitalize on it ?

I would be interested in the views of the potential entry, both from Scotland and the North East/West of England where I'm guessing the bulk of the prospective riders live.

Thanks

Ross

Perhaps there is a case for more good trials dedicated to pre 65/twinshocks regardless of whether there is a championship. The Highland 2 day shows that people will travel a long way to Scotland for a good stand-alone trial, and I would do so (from Yorkshire) if there were more like it.

Hi Ross,

Appreciating the success of Alvie - and seeing what happens at the Pre-65 Scottish, where there are no 'make-weight' modern entries, so no need to set multi-skill routes to resolve machine capability issues - I wonder whether a similar championship series, maybe defined as 'back to basics', in other words a straightforward trial with a single route through sections, just as the early very popular and highly successful at attracting entries British Bike championship/Sammy Miller series were - might prove to be very successful.  Already Somerton Classic are developing a similar concept series, now in its sixth year, and the Scarborough 2-Day was always very popular.

I know there will always be howls as to how else can someone on a modernised Cub or Bantam compete against a rigid, but the easiest answer is to set a small handful of 'testing' sections where the older/rigid class are excluded, on the basis of a 'Special Test' to decide ties.

In order to help in any way, I will happily guarantee very full coverage of the events in ORRe - like this year's unique and unequalled Pre-65 Scottish coverage, if you are interested.

You might get a little interest from this side of the Irish Sea.  There aren't many classic only events in Northern Ireland, so most outings are on the clubman or sportsman route along with twin shocks and moderns.  I've been keeping an eye on the classic calendar for GB but most events are just too far away.  I'd certainly be interested in a couple of pre 65 events that I could reach in Scotland.

Hi Ken. If the dates next year coincide, the Nostalgia and Newcastleton trials make a good weekend, doable from Stranraer. Sure you would enjoy them both.

Thanks for the interest.

Hi Deryk, dual (suitable) routes seem to be the way forward considering the range of abilities, ages and "modifications" My preferred solution to levelling the playing field, is  multiply scores by 0.75  1.0 and 1.25 depending on class. This seems to work well in Spain.

Hi Ross,

Obviously the answer is whatever works for whoever is trying to put it all together is what is best - that goes without saying.

But multi-routes have been the 'fashion' for a fair while now - and yet the entries are steadily declining, in spite of the fact that now there are more Ariels or Cubs in action than Ariel or Triumph ever built.....!!!!!!!

The one element that used to seem to be important was the fact that we all rode the same sections, so you could compare your personal progress in the sport - or at least that is what it felt like.  I still remember the Bemrose in which I got up Manor Steps with a single dab just after watching Eric Adcock on the works DOT struggle for a three............

It was the only time in the only trial on the only section that it happened - but I still remember it - and that helps keep my interest alive - and that couldn't happen with your plan.............

Hi Ross,

The Sammy Miller rounds do tend to be further south but don't forget to avoid, if possible, the North British series coordinated by the Poachers club, which are supported by Red Rose Classic in Lancashire, etc.

Happy Hogmanay

Cheers

Deryk
