Sums up pretty good. They're a small player with a hell lot of uncomplished potential had they continued their pursuit refining their ideas and design.

I think OSSA naturally gets a lot of hate for it's "out-of-the-box" thinking and engineering (with obvious risks and the need to fine-tune as the experience comes along) while the dominant most other makers follow the classic design (where everything is pretty much settled over the years). It very much makes OSSA a "black sheep" among trials bikes and we all know what happens to black sheep in a heard of whites. I mean just count how many people negatively comment and speculate here without even owing one plus it tends only to happen in OSSA thread in this kind of magnitude - people just check in to let their personal hate go.

offtopic: jkmr1, where did you get the wider bash plate, or you just built one yourself?

I think you are a bit over the top there. I see no hate, only reasonable responses to Craig's original request.

Personally I was delighted when the new Ossa was announced as I had a MAR in the day and recognised the value of the technical advances and fresh approach (though a plastic bush instead of a wheel bearing seemed dubious at best) and hoped to get one.

I had a go on a 300 and probably a 250 would have been fine for me. I would never buy the first batch of any make's new model and by the time the Ossa was properly sorted (map 15 I think?) the moment had gone.

I have to say the marque did itself no favours, you would hardly have known they existed; to say that promotion in the UK was low key would be to overstate the level of publicity.

I would have no criticism of anyone who bought an Ossa now but opinion was sought and accordingly given.

I have access to a very good machine shop who specialise in manufacturing/repairing one off parts (breakdown) for the textile industry, so manufacturing/repairing obsolete parts for the ossa shouldn't be a problem and as mentioned other parts are generic to other makes. 

 

I thought that the new Vertigo was using the same EFI system as the one used on the ossa ? (maybe i'm wrong) ?

 

So if the EFI not the same as the vertigo, this is the main worry as if it packs up its game over !

I have had my thought about the efi parts also but there are several ecm/ecu,s on the market so that is not a problem i think.

Megasquirt makes a mini model,this might be an option http://pe-ltd.com/engine-control-units.html .

My concern is to get the correct fuel and ignition maps for the Engine.

With the Cable and software for Ossa,is it possible to do backwards enginering as the big boys do on cars?

The cable for Ossa,is it a plain cable or is it some sort of interface incorporated in the cable?

And yes,i'm going to buy one when it shows up for proper Money :guinness:

I think so, they are all ROM-based, meaning flashable - that's how the dealers write the new map versions. EFI mapping is nothing more than a simple table with parameters written on the ROM chip: throttle-body opening angle according to RPMs, air temperature & engine temperature - from there the ECU will "see" how much fuel to give over the injector for each RPM and condition (a speciefic data "line" in that table). Advanced EFI systems also have the Lambda (O2-) sensor feedback (closed loop mode), this will measure the exhaust gas from the exhaust. Two stroke EFIs don't have this closed-loop mode to my knowledge since they'd "clog" up the Lambda sensor with oil in fuel. So in essence it's a very simple system and considerably more controllable over real-life testing and just remapping according to riding requirements or conditions than any carburator can ever offer with even the most advanced jetting.

 

The OSSA diganostic cable is just a regular USB cable to ECU connector and to pay 200 EURos plus for this seems like a daylight robbery to me. I wonder if we could just solder one ourselves and get the required ECU ROM flashing software?

Is ossa out of business? I asked the reseller in sweden and they said it was only rumors. Im about to buy one myself, but now it i don't know...

 

I think this is what happened.

Ossa was on the verge of collapse 18 months or so ago, and "moved into" the gas gas factory for them to make the bikes. Theydidnt and then went bust. So ossa in effect havnt been around producing bikes for 18 months.

I have the diagnostics cable, software and maps.

Very easy to do.

They did produce bikes after the merge- parts were worse, OSSA did a lot better job than GasGas (but got ok after awhile)

I bought one new (2014 Explorer) and it is wonderful.

I would buy another if I had cash, but I'm prepared for a bit. More time on some parts (so far no issues)

Anyone not prepared for that I wouldn't recommend buying one.
