I Knew It Wouldn't Take Long!

Progressing very well through the Model 80 re-build and I starts to hear the little voice. You know the situation, you're rounding the final bend on to the home straight of your current progect and all you keep hearing is the little voice saying to you, "what are you going to do for your next progect"!

Well the little voice got it's response, with the arrival into the garage yesterday of two boxes of bits containing 90% of a 199A. The missing parts won't be a problem as that well know purveyor of things Bultaco, has them listed on his wesite.

But my question is this, as the bits/bike do not contain a carb, what is the best approach? Is it a case of getting a replacement 2nd hand Bing or should I look at a Mikuni, Dellorto or a OKO? My reasoning on the newer type carbs is that I wasn't a big fan of Bings back in the day and found them troublesome especially in the float/float valve end of things. However back then, I was just a mere callow youth, with a lot less knowledge of how to set up a bike. Some would also say, that I haven't progressed much since then either. :)

Bear in mind I will only be using the bike for casual Sunday riding and nothing remotely serious, but I would like it to start easily and run as smoothly as possible. As ever any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have three Sherpa`s now a M199B, M199 and a M159 and I am using an OKO on the two 199`s and a Bing on the 159. The OKO`s are cheap and they seem easy to set up. One other good thing is using a Domino throttle the cable is the same size as for a Domino to a Bing. Graham.

Dell'Orto as all my other bikes are using them (SWM, KTM, Beta and Aprilia), best available collection of jets and needles, floats and valves also easy to mount. The Bing is nice but the bikes are using far more gasoline with this carb the Bing is also not so easy tune to the engine needs.

Hello Model80    I have a 199A it came with an old Mikuni and the older style air box off a 159 which is bigger and helps the engine breath i also replaced the old Mikuni because it would flood if engine was not running. Every one that has a go say how smooth and soft it runs at the bottom which make easy for me to hold on to, till its about 1/2 open then its still smooth but getting really strong and mean........... But a lot of fun     I forgot to say i fitted a Dellorto PHBH28BS ! and a Billit Parts adapter so it fits to the air filter rubber hose

I got a chance to get out on my bike at the start of the spring i had fitted some new style foot rest a bit lower and back a bit and i really like the way they feel so much wider to me they are so much easier to stand on, they are the big alloy new style ones my bike had had the original foot pegs moved up and back so moving them down and back a bit was quite a difference.  i also fitted some new Domino levers which i find easier to reach. looking forwards to seeing photos of your bikes as you rebuilds progress.

Hi Trialsfun     The top yoke is really well made, i spotted it being talked about on facebook by some Bultaco riders its made by Gerry Minshall, he had a set at  Telford on the Twinshock Trials Championship stand so i could have a good look at it before i spent my money. He has some photos on his facebook page under albums / mobile uploads.

I could never really decide how to set up the bars in clamps on the standard top yokes and i wanted to make the steering feel a bit quicker and feel like it wanted to turn ! i got my rear shocks a bit longer and fitted a michelin front tyre then spotted this top Yoke thinking every little bit helps and for me its feels better. But the best things i have fitted and the things i noticed the most were a new IRC rear tyre and the new style big flat alloy foot rests

Cheers bultacorock, I pressed the button last weekend for a Mikuni and will have it Wednesday next with a bit of luck. The airbox mod looks interesting as it would also appear that my bike (pile of bits :) ) has a 159 airbox along with a 199B air filter and inlet hose set-up.

Interesting what you say about the Domino levers over the Amal originals, will bear it in mind. Is that one of the Todotrials bashplates also fitted to your bike, how do you find it? I am seriously thinking of getting one as I was never a great believer in the originals, as to my mind they offered very limited protection.

I have a ToDoTrial bashplate on my 199a. I think it a great improvement over the too narrow original version, they are a quality product which fits perfectly and correctly contoured where needed around the cases.

The airbox on my bike is the 199a original, I know the works bikes were often changed to the 159 type but unless full throttle is used a lot of the time would it make a difference?
