thall1
I fitted new dimpled clutch plates in a 4rt....warmed the bike up & everything seemed ok until I stopped the bike in gear to see if I had clutch drag.....for a few seconds it seemed fine then the clutch 'bit' & off I went!....didn't for one minute think it was the plates as it wasn't dragging straight away so assumed I was loosing pressure in the hydraulics so bled the clutch and eventually put a new master cylinder kit in just to be sure but it was still the same....Anyway, I decided to go back to the starting point and put the original 'old' plates in....all is fine! no clutch drag on a stationary bike and I can push it back with ease whilst in gear. The new dimpled clutch plates thickness measure 1.5mm..the old ones are 1.4mm, so an overall gain of 0.5mm over the 5 dimpled plates once installed....does anyone know what the thickness of the original ones should be and what branded dimpled plates measure? I have looked in the manual and plate thickness is not listed - the dimpled ones I fitted didn't arrive with a brand packaging and I'm wondering if they are dodgy copies? jonnyc21
I don't have a measurement but am curious what oil your using?
thall1
originally I used Elf ....then went to ATF with no significant difference in the clutch feel or grab...Its still ATF in the bike now.... just tried it again with the 'old' plates back in and it still seems fine... I will put the dimpled plates back in tomorrow and see if the grabbing clutch returns.....if it does then I may dimple my 'old' plates just to try and improve it a little further.... sportsawyer
I just measured new OEM and aftermarket dimpled plates, and got the same thing -- 1.4mm for OEM, 1.5mm for aftermarket dimpled. I've used aftermarket dimpled plates from Jitsie and Apico, both work the same and I'd guess they are sourced from the same manufacturer. I have the dimpled plate setup in 2 bikes, and both work perfectly. I'm also using the OEM friction plates (with newer version -B00 papers) and Dexron VI full-synthetic ATF. I think the hydraulic actuation would self adjust to the slight change in stack height. Did you check the clutch hub and basket for notching? Not sure, but if either is badly notched, the change in stack height might cause problems. Only other thing I could think of is assembly wasn't quite right when put together with the dimpled plates the first time. You're getting the dot-marks lined lined up, right? I've also heard the center-nut torque should be done to spec (I've always done it to manual spec), and I tighten the spring bolts with crisscross pattern in many steps -- moving the lifter plate in evenly and slowly. Good luck. I've been very happy with the setup I'm using... really couldn't ask for a better clutch.
thall1
all sorted!..... the dimpled plates didn't have any burrs however, where they had been stamped out they had a sharp edge on one side.... I took a needle file to them and rounded off the square side to match the other side..... put them back in and all is ok!.... many thanks for confirming the thickness....
jonnyc21
My friend has an 05 and runs the Dexron VI as well, it works great for him too. Was thinking if you were running something thicker it might account for the issue... Glad you were able to get that resolved without major work.
