mechanic
Hi, I'm a newbie on the site and hoping someone can help me with a maintenance issue. I will post this in the correct forum also, but felt it was only polite to introduce myself first. Now living in western Canada, but originally from the UK. Had a few trials bikes back when God was a lad. I currently have a tired old Gasgas JTX 320 ('97 I think) awaiting the installation of new fork seals. That is where the problem begins! I cannot unscrew the upper sleeve on the slider, due to either the two parts being time fused together, or simply not being able to get enough torque to break the threads. I can find no data on this particular fork on the internet. I would normally remove seals by first taking out the dust seal. Remove the circlip above the main seal. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the leg, and then sliding the stantion and slider apart with a brisk tug or two. That is simply not working with the Gasgas leg. Am I missing something? Can someone advise me of the correct procedure if I've missed something and better yet, link me to a pdf or other document that pertains to the said model. Thanks in anticipation of some help. dadof2
They do unscrew but can be tight. You need to get a bit of thick walled pipe bored so that it is an exact fit on the slider / seal retainer. Then drill and tap (M6) 4 holes in it to line up with the holes in the retainer. The pipe needs a handle welded to it. Turn down the end of 4 No M6 screws to screw into the slider holes. Put the whole fork leg in the freezer for 30 minutes. Take it out, clamp the bottom (where spindle goes through) in vice. Heat the retainer and with the tool you have made it should undo fairly easily. It is Right hand thread so anti clockwise to undo.
