malcolm Posted April 7, 2017 Report Share Posted April 7, 2017 My son bought a new 2017 250 txt pro. It starts ok but when he is riding it it seems to lose power and at times backfires. The problem seems to be when the engine is warm. The plug looks ok and we stripped and cleaned the carb. One thing we noticed was some melting to the ht lead (it looks like it was sitting against the exhaust). We taped over with electricians tape. Any thoughts. sirdabalot Posted April 8, 2017 Report Share Posted April 8, 2017 Check for good fuel flow from the tank, pull the fuel pipe from the carburettor, hold a jug under it, turn the petrol on and let it run for up to a minute. That's the cheap bit out of the way. Next, if you're sure the carburetor is clean and the floats and shut off needle are set up ok spend money to repair/renew the HT lead/coil or borrow another to test. zippy Posted April 10, 2017 Report Share Posted April 10, 2017 Replace the HT lead. Melted area is bad, but I am thinking that as the bike heats up. The HT lead will heat up with more electricity flowing through it. Heat makes things expand, so if there is a small break in the HT lead, when cold could be making contact, but when warmed up it doesn't make consistent contact due to expansion from heat causing the break point to separate.
