riffraffretro
Since fitted a new coil and Venhill decompression mechanism... spark still appears weak and no joy with starting (although the kicking process is much less barbaric with the decomp)! Electrex electronic ignition about to meet 70's Spanish metal - I'll update as and when! I was considering digging an 8' deep pit out the garden and throwing £20 notes into it - but I'll save myself the hassle and throw myself and the Cota in if the Electrex fails to evoke life (with the Missus filling in the hole shortly thereafter). Peace! Edited May 26, 2018 by riffraffretro

Glad to hear the decompressor works ....I wouldn't be without it. Quote
riffraffretro
Filled gearbox and clutch with new fluids in readiness for the BIG EVENT (getting the useless heap of cr*p started), only for everything to leak out of various cracks and poor weld repairs in the RHS crankcase! It seems that the closer I look, the more issues I find... can only imagine the life this poor fella has had! That's me and the Mont done... back to being a rather expensive and not particularly functional, garage shelf! Over and out. keychange
ThreeBond is your friend ....let it cure at least 24 hours and it lasts years
riffraffretro
Thanks again Keychange, I'll give that a try. TBH, its going to be an engine strip and rebuild next - I've tried the 'make do and mend' approach, which hasn't exactly proved fruitful, so best to bite the bullet and get properly stuck-in from here on. Cheers for your help, encouragement and guidance... all greatly appreciated.
keychange
Went to take my 247 for a run today and for the first time in years she wouldn't start. No spark so started working backwards from the cut of switch ...finally removed the low voltage coils and it appears that I have a short circuit to earth. So it looks like a burnt out coil - strange that it got me home without an issue last ride. Does anyone know the correct resistance for the coil? riffraffretro
Just checking-in and updating an old thread: Disassembled the engine, checked piston/rings/cylinder, replaced crank seals, wired in Electrex World ignition and fitted Venhill decompression mechanism, fitted new seals, gaskets and the like... prodded the kickstart and... she only started, FIRST KICK! Can't quite believe I've been grappling (on and off), with the non-start issue since Autumn 2017, but got there in the end. A BIG thanks to all of those that offered words of wisdom, encouragement and comfort along the way - and to Yamanx for his generosity lending me the primary gear puller adapter... I'm so grateful to you all. WOOHOO. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

mjlyam
Don't forget that cota 247 points are always live! As the points open there is a barely percept able dip in resistance measured with a multimeter set to ohms. A 'squawkbox' was also used(it gives out a tone that alters as the point open.) This issue drove me mad too till 'Lorenzo' on the forum put me straight. Cheers to him! Mike
keychange
mjlyam - yes it came back to me and so a revisited the points wire connection and it wasn't properly isolated - fixed that and all good
riffraffretro
... and here he is (TOBY), The Old Bast**d from Yesteryear (sorry, the bike fought me all the way, in every way... it got personal in the end!), finally ready to trial.

Much easier to get at ...in my case I just left the old one in situ with wire removed and installed a new one but remember to ensure a sound earth which can require scraping paint or powder coating On 11/28/2017 at 9:46 PM, keychange said: You asked " should the wire that runs to the live side of the coil read as shorted to earth at any point? " well yes when the points are closed ...that's why they are called breaker points. Any pics on how one can mount the condenser under the gas tank?
