nigel dabster
its not the number of gears but the usable gears in sections.

And the experience/skill level of the rider. Fewer gears means you have to just get on and ride effectively.

During a postage stamp trial, maybe. Real trial, 6 sensibly spaced gears are always better than 5.
heffergm
I'm ambivalent, provided the first 4 gears are well spaced trials gears and 5th+ are road gears. So whether it's a TRS (5) or a GG (6) isn't a big deal to me, since 1-4 are trials gears in both.
b40rt
Depends on the terrain, I use 5th & 6th off road regularly.

heffergm
I don't know... I don't think i've ever had a TRS in 4th gear. But I recall hearing it's a 'climb a big hill' gear like the GG, so I imagine it's about the same.
baldilocks
@nigel dabster yes on std gearing you can use 4th on a TRS on a muddy climb, not sure it's the same as gas gas but lower than sherco
