:hat: From what you have explained it sounds as though your bike has a case of fuel pre ignition / pinking . This does tend to get worse as the bike gets older or has more use and can depend on the fuel / air , fuel / oil mixture you are running.

As your bike gets older carbon builds up on the top of your piston and stays there. This gets very hot and glows red igniting the petrol before the spark plug does. You wont notice this on idle as the engine has less fuel ,but open it up , more fuel is injected and the problem will start. You may be able to correct this problem by

a - stripping the top end down and cleaning the carbon off.

b - Cooling the engine down by going richer on your mixture , raising the needle to start with. Leave your idle well alone. The improvement will be gained from your needle , and then your main jet if the needle doesnt improve matters.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :santawink:

As a preventative measure try using higher RON fuel. Optimax is 98 RON and Tesco do a 99 RON version as well as the various 97RON options from BP, Esso etc. It does tend to keep carbon build up to a minimum.

Do'd and don't's about high RON fuel.

DO get it from a station that's sells a lot of it. The chemicals used to raise the RON number do lose their effectiveness.

DON'T store it for ages for the reasons above.

Another alternative is LEADED 4star. It is available.

My rev3 has been doing the same thing, as mentioned by someone else it sounds like pinking, which could be caused by the timing being out(possibly caused by wear). What I have done is remove the flywheel and rotate the stator plate clockwise by about 1 to 1.5 degrees. It has stopped the pinking and the bike feel great. Don`t forget to mark the stator plate and the casing with a small pop mark so you know where it is before you move it.

Same problem with 02 rev 3 200. Tried swapping coil, cdi, cleaning carb, new plug, different fuel mixes and ron ratings. All that happened was the pinking moved up and down the rev range! Sorted by the nice guys at Robinsons of Rochdale. The Stator had corroded and was the cause of the problem.

My 2003 Rev-3 developed this pinging. It occurred when rolling off the throttle at mid to high rpms.

Upon removing the barrel, a lot of carbon and laquer buildup was found on the piston, rings, and barrel surface. This really surprised me as the bike had been ran on unleaded premium and Motul 800 for all of it's (then) 18 month life at a 60:1 ratio.

The carbon and laquer was easily removed and no damage had occurred, so the only parts needed were a head and base gasket.

After reassembly the knocking was completely gone. Afterwards I also switched to Bel-Ray 2 stroke oil, as I found out some other people had had a similar experience. I will point out that I often rode it for short periods in the back yard, and this may have exacerbated the condition.

The knocking used to vary in severness. After seeing the carbon layer on top of the piston and head surface, I attributed this knocking mostly to the carbon impacting the piston & head surfaces together around the edges. I have seen this in other motors before, especially stationary motors on pumps etc, wherein the carbon swells due to humidity etc if the motor is not used.

That's my 2 bob's worth.

Cheers, Jim

Let me reply a little further on Jimsshed reply.

Just today i checked my piston/rings by looking tru the exhaust opening and to my surprise i noticed quite some carbon built up within 15 hours of slow driving. Especially the cilinderhead was covered with wet/oily carbon, which is the result of my 15 hours of merely slow/idle driving. Here in holland we don't use more than 1/2 throttle. The motor does not become hot enough to cleanly burn all the oil/fuel.

So, an old engine, which starts knocking can very well have this problem occuring: carbon build up.

Detonation (pinking?) can be caused by a few things...

1. lean fuel condition ,(anything from a very worn carb slide to a small intake vacuum leak or the wrong jetting/needle position for your altitude.)

2. Improper timing , to far advance and it will ping easily, most all the time , to far retarded and it will take longer periods of straight running to ping because of the increase in exhaust gas temperature.

3.High cylinder head temp , poor coolant circulation, wrong coolant mix, improper pressure cap.(the higher the pressure the higher the boiling point) plugged radiator core or fins

4.carbon build up on piston/head (restricted exhaust can make a two stroke ping to, raises combustion temp)

Hope it helps some...

**!!! do not run carb cleaner spray thru a 2 stroke when running, it will shorten its life span!!!!

If you want to decarbon it with out a tear down (the best way )you can get a spray bottle and put water or brake fluid in it, remove air filter boot, warm up bike and hold it about 1/4 throttle and squirt a little in the carb throat, till the motor just stumbles let it clear out and repeat. an assistant makes this much easier to do. VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF LIQUID !!!

have fun...

Glenn :hyper::D

P.S. if you use brake fluid be prepared for the vast amounts of white smoke,

and let the bike run a while w/ a few "wfo" bursts thrown in to help clear it out...
