Montys in Trial 2 this season

Seeing lots of Montesa's placing well in Trial 2 this year (Martyn, Grattarola, Moret, Marcelli).  Are these guys running pretty much stock machines? Or are they modded out to the max like Bou's and Fuji's machines?

Most of these lads run out of satellite teams and it’s fair to say the bikes are not standard. Grattarola’s bike for sure is pretty trick. 

I suppose the big difference is bou’s bike is covered in special factory bits that money can’t buy. These boys are mainly using parts and mods that you can buy off the shelf, if you’ve re mortgaged your house that is...

You have to remember too that in this class the 2 strokes are limited to 250, so the 4rt has more advantage in this class than in GP (or less of a disadvantage whatever way you look at it:lol:)

I would guess that most of them have been modified at least a little. 

I would speculate they all have at least a programmable throttle body on them, fast throttle tubes (white tube instead of stock black), anything removed that isn't critical to a competition (extra wires/harnesses, tubes, tanks, etc.), and have installed the riders preference of brake pads, fluids (engine oil, transmission oil, coolant, etc).  

Past that there is so many other things that can be done its hard to guess what else they may have gone for...

Trust me the 250 2 strokes of the top lads in trial 2 will be a lot more powerful than any 300 you’ve ever ridden,the montesas of Toby Martyn and Gabriel Marcelli are very trick, the frames have been altered and lightened , they run the same exhaust systems as bou and Fuji’s bikes amongst other things

All will have their own preferences for camshaft timing, profile etc. etc. Even to the point of the type of stuffing they have in the erm seat, saddle, bum perch!! ? And of course every conceivable item that looks standard will be made from Unobtainium and other featherweight materials.?‍? But in all of this its the riders skill and commitment to the sport that makes them stand out from the crowd.

Was studying Toby's bike at the St Davids BTC in April - non standard barrel  - Think was S3 so presume bigger than std 300RR -as above full works exhaust - (a pre 2009 type silencer but bigger modified capacity) Footrest hangers - looked painted titanium etc different and simplified wiring etc . Sounded to have a lot of torque and Toby was riding it very well in the "traditional"  type going.  He was as good as anybody on the big muddy/rocky hill climb  - flat out in 4th at the bottom. One thing we all noticed that he did have was the biggest smile of any of the riders there:thumbup::thumbup:

Just because... FIM_Trial_Regulations_2018.04.22  States less than or equal to 300cc max for a 4T in Trial 2. (http://www.fim-live.com/en/sport/regulations-and-documents/trial/)

Sub Section 3.1 Motorcycles and Classes

Paragraph: 5. Championships and Capacities:

  • FIM Trial World Championship TrialGP > 250cc / 2T and 4T
  • FIM Trial2 World Championship Trial2 ≤ 250cc / 2T and ≤300cc / 4T 
  • FIM Trial125 World Championship Trial125 ≤ 125cc\
  • FIM Women’s Trial World Championship TrialGP Women ≥ 250cc* / 2T and 4T
  • FIM Women’s Trial2 World Cup Trial2 Women ≤ 250cc / 2T and ≤300cc / 4T

The FIM (and AMA) has done the same thing with motocross for years. MX2 is 125 2-stroke or 250 4-stroke. MXGP is 250  2-stroke or 450 4-stroke. And 4-stroke Betas can also go to 300cc in Trial2.

its not the same. Not at all. It was to discourage 2 strokes that the rule in mx was brought in probably over 10 years ago?

there was a rumour that trials would go 4t so gas gas sherco and the 4rt came out, although the only 4t bike for many years was the 4rt.

In mx as the double capacity (almost in mx1) give an advantage all manufacturers now produce their own 4ts. Not so in trials.

several times the trials rules have been "adjusted" to suit Spain, Spanish riders and Montesa hrc.
