Road registering

Hi all,

I'm going to register my M158 so I can ride it to local bush land for practice, and hopefully get it ready in time for the Sydney Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride at the end of Sept. I'm in the process of getting the electrical parts together.

I wonder if anyone knows, or could measure the diameter of the front headlamp? Would it be around 5"?

Dont know how strict your construction and use regulations are or how well they are enforced, your police seem to be very keen, but I’d start there. It’s very easy to make suggestions and be totally wrong which won’t help you. Most older trials bikes had fairly ineffective lights in any case. If you are riding off road in failing light you might consider something else far more efficient that wont upset plod?????

They are around that size Cornishflyer. I have one on the bench where I keep my bikes but I won`t be back there until next week. I can`t remember if that headlight was off a M159 or a M199 but they were all the same size on the later ones anyway. Not real sure about the very early Sherpas. Someone must have one in the corner of their shed still.

I have been looking into this recently for an Alpina that i am putting together, i believe the standard headlight is a CAV item, 130mm.

As i do not intend to ride in the dark i am looking at fitting total loss electrics with a 12V Li-ion CCTV battery, LED bulbs, DC horn.

What a great idea, I hadn't thought of doing it that way. Similarly I have no actual plans to ride at dark, or even dusk. How long do you expect to get out of that 1800.Ah battery?

I guess it will depend on how carried away you want to get with the headlight bulb. The site above has dipping bulbs rated at 250mA, low beam and 500mA, high beam at 12V. For the brake light boards i have seen them rated at 80mA for brake light and 60mA for tail light numberplate light. You can get very bright, higher rated dipping bulbs which seem to be around 1600mA high beam. My guess is that with the  lights on riding on high beam using the lower rated headlight bulb i would get around 2hrs using the 1800mAh battery and 45 minutes or so if you used the very bright bulb on high beam. Higher rated batteries are available for a few pounds more. Having said that the battery i have is so small, light and cheap you could carry a spare in your pocket.

Just like to mention i have not actually installed any of this yet so cannot vouch for how successful it would be but i am looking to use a KTM type bar switch which is quite a nice solution, as it has all the controls in a single switch. Apico make an alternative, this is what i am intending to use and i made a quick sketch based on this. Not yet having a switch to test i cannot confirm wire colours are definitely correct though.
