boner
I’m trying to identify an imperial bolt and was wondering if someone could tell me what the upper section of the bolt with no thread on is called? Is it different to a normal fully threaded bolt, ie all the way to the head? ive got the length / diameter / tpi sorted, just need one with the thread cut to the right length on the body of the bolt. Thanks Boner.

Thanks Boner. Hi Boner, yes shoulder is correct. A bolt is threaded part way along its length. If fully threaded up to the underside of the head then it is a set pin. Either type is measured from end to underside of head so length does not include the head.
konrad
In the aircraft world it's called the "grip". http://spenceraircraft.com/hardware/fasteners-screws-bolts/airframe-bolt.html
boner
Thanks for the input. The terminology I was looking for was ‘part threaded’ referring to the shoulder. I’ve hopefully found what I’m looking for and ordered it.

oz thumper
In the UK a fastener threaded all the way was referred to as a "Set Scew" or 'Machine Screw" , Bolts always had a shank and a threaded section I believe to reduce the stress concentration around the head when subject to high torque and high tension loads. 2

FWB Products @ Stoke on Trent https://www.fwb.co.uk/ or Barfast http://home.btconnect.com/barfast/ these people also stock metric fine, I highly recommend Britannia Fasteners Burslem though they do not have a website.
