Crank bearing replacement

 Yes, the packing should have been replaced when the seals were done.

But he's just paid 200 to have them replaced, surely a half decent mechanic would have checked for excessive lift on the crankshaft and advised him accordingly ?

A build up of crap in the exhaust is possibly/hopefully the problem.

Sounds like he didn't know what he was at first time round, so id take the advice that the mains are gone with a pinch of salt

Well...there are shafts on both sides of the crank with bits attached to them.

Grab one and give it a shake.

Main bearing slop can be felt.

There may be a bit of side to side, but fore/aft/up/down should be nonexistent.

The same is true with the connecting rod, if you get the jug off.

Apologies for delay on update. Thank you all for all your advice, I managed to find some one to do it for £60 plus parts, turns out he lives about 10 minutes from me. One of the bearings was excessively noisy and slight movement. Replaced exhaust packing as well. She sounds crisp now. Thanks again
