I am thinking of using the switch/cabling thats there for the front lamp but dont know if 12 or 6v horn i need to buy and from where. It will be thrown as soon as i get passed mot. gasserguy
The 9 volt mega horns are legal. I would find another MOT station. https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/362531187425?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=362531187425&targetid=856645275288&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1007144&poi=&campaignid=7643169318&mkgroupid=96891587948&rlsatarget=aud-381667280803:pla-856645275288&abcId=1139576&merchantid=7260474&gclid=Cj0KCQiAyp7yBRCwARIsABfQsnQGcERWVJUVfcs6xivIlyKdokLcImpnixTRNHZVbhIwlpa7Cow85JUaAquWEALw_wcB The MOT GOV.UK manual says it should not be 2 tone. Tester has no idea. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-motorcycles/7-audible-warning Edited February 15, 2020 by gasserguy
cleanorbust
I've never used any vehicle with a two tone horn and it's never been an MOT issue for any of them. Always a bit annoying when an MOT tester is wrong and insists that they're right.
section swept
Bulb type horns ok up to about (manufactured)1976. After that it is a continuously sounding electric single tone horn. Two tone horns a debatable point...my partners Nissan Juke has some lovely loudish two tone horns these were factory fitted. A single horn able to produce a two tone note is akin to a police siren. Where as two separate horns sounded at once will produce a better sound warning. The regulations are not clear so a torch battery type powered horn could be classed as legitimately an electric horn. What ever you say about said MOT tester, they are probably worried about their job.
cleanorbust
He would be right to worry about his job for issuing instruction contrary to the DoT MOT manual which states horns must not be two tone.
misscrabstick
Single tone electrical horn of sufficient volume that can be operated easily from the normal riding position, that tester is an idiot.
trapezeartist
There may be a bit of a terminology issue over "two tone". Two tone as in "nee-nah" is definitely illegal except on emergency vehicles, as is any multi-tone that plays La Cucaracha or whatever (remember them?). Two horns of different tone sounding together is legal, but not mandatory.
v1nn1e
I use this and it passes at my local ('bike) MOT place... https://www.thehornit.com/the-hornit-db140-new
tomodanotri
Hey, stumbled upon your post from a while back. Sorry to hear about your MOT trouble with the horn. Dealing with those regulations can be frustrating! I remember a similar situation I had with my old bike a few years ago. Ended up finding a solution through bosshorn.com. Even though it was a while ago, their range might still offer options for your Sherco. Edited May 29 by tomodanotri
