kevin j
My dad had an old 2 cycle golf cart for use on the farm. It had forward and reverse with a lever switch by changing the polarity of the starter motor windings. Whichever direction the motor ws rotating to start, that's which way it ran. Supposedly it doesn't happen on the electronic ignitions (sans points) but I have had it happen twice on my TY350. It's quite a thrill to need more power, crank the throttle, and have it stall and instantly power into reverse. Was the eninge running the entire time, and still running, when you put it into gear? Or was it running, shut off, and restarted? I'd vote with the rest to timing and flywheel key.
andy_290
OK guys, this is driving me mad now. Had everything off and reset the timing back to factory settings, put a new plug in and flywheel back on, tank back on, started up second kick and ran perfect on the stand. had to turn it off by putting a cloth over the exhaust as there's no kill switch. Put the mudguard back on and the flywheel cover and now it won't start at all!?!?! What the....?!??!?! Any ideas anyone?
nigel dabster
Basic mistake never stop a bike by an exhaust bung bad move. If you have no kill switch then make sure the tickover is very low and you should be able to stall it easily foot and front brake full on let out clutch s l o w l y. if it started ok then the timing should be sorted. You may have blown the main seals by doing what you did so now its not got any compresion. Oh dear oh dear.
andy_290
Don't know why I didn't put my foot on the back brake? Kick my own ass time. How would I know if there's no compression?
gasgasssser
blown the seals?hmm... Take plug out, turn engine over several times to get rid of any crap, clean plug, have another try. Steve PS Get a kill switch!
andy_290
I've spoken to a couple of dealers today, they're all suggesting the stator is knackered, the guy I bought it off had retarded the timing, and it looks like he never put the o ring seal back on the ignition cover, there was all sorts of mud and water in there. Reckon it's knackered it. Taking it to MRS in the week. And it's getting a kill switch!
john.b
Just a thought but how tight did you tighten the flywheel nut? If not tight enough you may have sheared the woodruff key allowing the flywheel to slip when you stopped the engine. Try removing the flywheel and check for the woodruff key condition. andy_290
We used my dad's airhammer and then tightened with a torque wrench to 73ft/lbs. The first thing we checked for was the woodruff key but it looks fine, still sat in it's slot and all intact. I was hoping it was that but it wasn't
