sam
TY 80, the bike starts and runs but when put in gear you have to rev it up and push off while releasing the clutch to get rolling, once its in the power band, runs great. Is this the way the TY80'S run? The topend sounds tight. I would like it to run slow and zippy while in 1st gear, any Ideas? sam
jaylael
The exhaust might be plugged. One sure cure is to have the exhaust system "hot tanked" or perhaps burned out with a torch. Once a fire is lit inside the pipe, flow air through it until a catalytic burn is completed. It will get red hot so be safe how you go about this. Once this is done you will need to repack the rear muffler. If the exhaust is not plugged, proceed to check timing, air filter, and compression. If the top end is well worn out it will be hard to start and sluggish. Good luck.
sam
Thanks Jay, I'll start with those suggestions first! This is a friends bike, the pilots name is "Wild Bill" and he is about 4.5' tall. This will be his first year at trials. sam
james111089
are you sure its the orignal engine and not a dt50 or 80 engine? James
sam
No doubt about it, the TY is a 80cc! Would you fellow trials enthusiast happen to know how much the compression should read on TY 80's Engine? We want this mini running top notch! "Wild Bill" Is meaner than {cat poop}We feel he will be doing splatters in no time! sam
dgshannon
Is this the way the TY80'S run?sam <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Absolutely not. A TY80 will pull smooth and strong, right off idle. It is in all ways, a real trials engine, and should run as such.
sam
DGSHANNON, Would you know how much compression a ty 80 engine should have fresh?
jaylael
I think 125 psi shouldn't be out of the question. Just check it. If it's like 70 psi that is low. Good luck to wild Bill. I look forward to hime kicking trials BUTT! JL

kawasarki
Hi, If the bike has a lack of compression this should show by the exhaust dribbling oil & hard to start. Check crank seals. If all is ok in this region check ignition timing (1.8mm BTDC ). Check points gap( 0.3 - 0.4 mm ). Check spark plug (NGK B6HS Gap 0.5 - 0.6mm ). Next check Carb. (Clean fuel no blocked jets , Air screw 1 1/2 turns out , 86 Main jet , 049 needle clip position 2 ,Pilot jet 34, Float level 23mm + or - 1mm. Also check the clutch isn't slipping. Good Luck !
