warwick7735
Hi All I'm after assistance with a problem that occered on Sunday while out trialling. I started the bike after walking a section when it just died, kicked it over again, it ran for a few seconds then died again. Thought it could be fuel so turned it onto reserve waited a few seconds then kicked it into life. It ran for a few sections more until it died again. Getting plenty of fuel, kicked it back into life. I rode a few more sections, where I stopped the motor to chat to a marshall where I couldn't start it no matter what I did. I thought that maybe the kill switch was faulty (this is a 2 wire job wired directly to the coil, is that ok) so pulled off one of the wires, kicked it over and it spluttered into life. Rode the last few sections then back to the car thinking that was the problem sorted. Pressure washed the bike back at home, where it refused to start again. Removed the plug to see I was getting a spark but nothing. Changed the plug, no spark. Removed the plug cap and tried again, no spark.Started to check all the wiring, removed the lighting loom while I was at it, kicking away every now and then. Suddenly we got a spark, don't know if there was a loose connection or what but it's run for a good 15mins no problem since. Was wondering if it could be a stator fault but I thought these either worked or didn't. Am i right in saying that if I contact Lampkin Imports and give them my frame no. they will see if it's been replaced and if not supply one FOC. Could it be my coil braking down. Does anybody know how to test the stator, coil etc as I have a multimeter just need to know which wires to test and the readings required. All help appreciated, I know Betas are prone to electric faults. Many thanks Warwick
essex rider
Lampkins will only replace FOC if your bike is less than 2 years old
drop5
had a similar problem on my 2000 rev3 would'nt start but when it run it was ok. turned out to be the cdi unit behind the head stock. check to see if you'v got a good fat spark. the stator fault causes poor running and misfiring.as for testing the coil i got readings between 0.3 ohm and 30 ohm depending where i put the probe on the earth bar. Lampkins did not have a reading for the coil. If you can't borrow bits from someone else bike to try to locate the fault, lampkins will send you the bits and return what you don't use. good luck.
