2020 txt250 not starting

Recently bought a used 2022 txt250. Was running fine. Came with a flywheel weight and wanted to try it without it. After removing it but putting it back on, because I didn't have the right bolt for the flywheel without the weight, it started but only ran for a minute and couldn't get it restarted. Later in the day, tried again and started once but only briefly ran before backfiring or making some popping sound and now won't start. Now occasionally when trying to start it it will make a loud exhaust popping sound but will not start. Could it be related to having removed the flywheel and messing something up in the process or something else unrelated? Any advice on where to start is much appreciated.

Remove the flywheel and check the status of the woodruff key and also the mating surfaces of the taper.

Sounds like the flywheel has spun on the shaft and consequently now your timing is incorrect.

100% agree with above.   Have a look with flywheel off (you may need a puller). If there is any scoring you should lap the surfaces with fine valve grinding paste, tyen clean, then fit Correct size woodruff key. (Only stick out a little).
