Got to remove the old non standard green colour before I can repaint in white so if anyone has used a good paint removal product they could reccommend then that would be a big help, I am doing the front forks too. wiltshire_boy Posted March 28, 2006 Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 (edited) Hi Jetset, Not sure how much you were looking to spend but I think it would be worth the effort of stripping everything off the bike to get a decent finish. It's reasonably easy to do and as long as you take pictures and/or draw diagrams of any complicated bits it should be fairly easy to put back together too. Up to you of course but i think it would look terrible if you tried to paint it with everything else in situ. It would also be a good chance to check and regrease or replace the swinging arm, rear shock and headset bearings and check for any cracks or wear on the frame and components. It might mean you find more things that need repairing or replacing but you would then have the satisfaction and peace of mind knowing that it had all been done right. If you strip it down then you can get the frame blasted for perfect paint removal and maybe a nice powder coating to refinish it. Or, to save a bit of money use Nitromors all purpose to strip it, plenty of rubbing down then paint it yourself. HTH, Roy. P.S. Is that an STI in the background? The car in the background was an evo race car I think, that pic was taken by the guy I bought the bike off last weekend. He had an WRX which is on ebay at the mo i think. I may strip the bike down, I don't like bodging and like you say I can always take plenty of pics etc. It does seem pretty straight forward. (famous last words) The bike has been mechanically very well looked after with frequent oil changes etc and no been trialed so hopefully i won't uncover any nasty's. I intend to get some new plastics etc, smarten it up, return it to it's original colours etc and then use it in the fields locally until my skills improve! jackman Posted March 28, 2006 Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 It didn't take me too long to take my 175 all apart, paint it, and put it back together.. If you're just looking for something to practice on, maybe just service it really well and ride it for the summer and work on it over winter (if you're just itchin' to ride) If you decide to rebuild it, just take pictures of every process like mentioned before and it's no problem putting back together. Simple project actually, it reminds me of mechano:) I rebuilt a trike fairly quickly (well, repainted and serviced it. Didn't take it all apart, just mainly the back end). Fear not! It's not a huge project. When I stripped down my frame I used an electric drill with a (many) wire brush attatchment on it. It worked great, I finished the frame in probably 10 minutes, rubbed it down with paint thinner (to make sure there was nothing left like dust or dirt). And when it evaporated, I primed it twice. I let it bake on for a few days by the wood stove in the shop and then painted it metallic silver. Just bag off the tripple clamp and tape over the sticker at the front and away you go If you want to just do a mask up job to it and paint around it, I recomend cleaning the places you want to paint with a wire brush (hand type works fine too), then put thinners on it, and depending on the paint you might be able to put it right on, or it might need to be primed first (buy fast dry paint too! even though it's more expensive, it will let you finish it a lot quicker!). To avoid overspray (a MUST) you have to tape off any place that isn't being intended to be sprayed and it will turn out fine. That's what I did when I repainted this trike: I didn't take the engine out, and I managed to paint everything so it looks that way.. check out what I mean, frame on resto.. Hope this isnt considerd spam and can help you out! Here are a couple of the 175's frame (taken completely appart): Both these machines were pretty ratty before.A little time put into anything can make it look like new!! Hope it helps you out! jetset Posted March 29, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 29, 2006 Thanks for the advice and pictures, I have taken a load of photos and started to strip it down. I am going to do a proper job and get the frame and forks shot blasted and powder coated in the proper colours. When I put it all back together it will give me a chance to check, clean, grease and spray everything else and see how it all fits together for future! The very back part of the frame that sticks out over back tyre which the silencer and mudguard fixes too needs straightening out as it bends in a little at the mo which is probably why the silencer was rubbing on the tyre before. I think a bit of heat and some tweaking should bring it out a bit, luckily it is just one side and is independent of the other. I am a bit wary about taking the front forks apart to send for powder coat, might do those myself then I can leave suspension etc in tact as the seals don't leak or anything. The forks and frame have been painted over and the original white frame and blue forks can be seen underneath where the paint is chipped.
