as long as I putter along in 1st I can hardly hear it

the faster I go, the highter the gear the louder, harder the knocking gets

I suspect it is the chain tensioner

but am not sure

anyone else experienced a strange knocking noise

and can tell me how to get rid of it?

could it be the fancy half-link in my chain?

thanks for your help

Copied this from another thread

This is usually the split link that has worn more than the rest of the chain, check the roller after the split link for markings (lines on the roller).

Definitely worth trying a new split link anyway before you splash out on a new chain and sprockets.

Make sure you get the right size split link as well, there are a lot of different pin sizes.

thank you Chris

the link next to the 1/2-link is the master

and you are right, the rollers look more worn than the rest of the chain

I NEVER before saw or heared of a 1/2-link

do I NEED that?

what for?

if not:

I have 2 new chains at hand

a DID HD supertrallala MX chain

and a DID VT Xring

any reason not to use the X-ring chain?

...but how do you like the 2.9 compared to the gas gas?

right]

cann't comment on which is better for trials

the Sherco is snappier, I like the gearing better

the Gassi feels torquier, the powerband seems smoother and she turns tighter

Greetings,

I Had the same mysterious noise ,baffled me for months ,thought it was a lose spoke ,no fitted new chain ,end of noise ,but check your tensioner also as it may be out of whack. The split link is for fitting when the chain has stretched and needs links taken out so you ,still use ,speedway boys use d to use them .Cheers from New Zealand.

Make sure you get the original chain. They are actually listed as a specific trials chain, and are narrower than the MX or O-Ring type. You`ll chop the chain tensioner block up with the MX chain, and they come awfully close to the engine cases.

Use a vernier and measure across the side plates and pin length, there`s millimeters of differance.
