Today At Kinlochleven

WOW, the sun was shining.. no honest really shining, people were taking their coats off at one point.

Great Trial , not much water in the burns and with some sections having been eased ( beside the glencoe road) scores should be a lump lower than last years

Len Hutty, Tony Calvert, Carlos Casas Alan Wright all riding neat and tidy whilst younger Drommet was nursing a sick Cotton ( but under dads advice 'not through sections')

Peter Gaunt dropped a slack 5 on section 4 as he was first to clean the section only to ride out of the section missing the 'ends' cards completely!

couple of questions though.. spanish and japanese bikes competing, i had to cast an eye over the bultacos, Ossa, montesa and Hondas that were been ridden today and i cant help but ask.. bultaco 1961? montesa 250 1965? impala '63? ossa 1963? Honda?

Minimum age for competitors, some of the riders looked very young, surely 17 is the minimum age given that the bike has to be ridden on the road?

lets hope the weather holds i'll bring up the 'ambre solaire' in the morning just incase.

The Honda is a pre65 bike!

I never had a good look at - it naever made the top of pipeline but I think its an S90 (how do I know I had one when I was 14!)

Nice to see something different competing from numerous cubs etc.

Any idea of a leaderboard after day one?

As you say, a GENUINE pre 65 Scottish bike!

Probably one of the only bikes in the whole entry that has actually competed in the Scottish Six Days Trial, let alone WIN IT! (1963).

It would be nice to see 'XON 688' win again, but it is a lot to ask when it is up against all those 'MICKEY MOUSE' bikes that are nearly as up to date as Doug's 4RT, go on Griffo give it your best shot! :D

okay,

Dan shorey is on record as riding a bultaco modified for trials in the Banburys club trial in 1961 and in fact factory bikes (156cc sherpas) were ridden in the ssdt in 62 and 63 and a 196cc version was entered by bultos nephew i think in 64 so i do not argue that these bultacos /montesa /hondas/ossa that were entered were not eligble on the basis of when they were built or how they were modofied and in fact I personally think that the bikes I saw in Kinlochleven were interesting modifications of pre 65 bikes.

HOWEVER ( and i can only draw on my feeble memory as the regs have now been withdrawen from the SSDT website) I was of the understanding that bikes had to be of BRITISH MANUFACTURE to be qualified to enter

so unless a group of birmingham engineers joined Me lord wellington on his peninsula campaign, liked it so much they stayed on, as wellington marched north, and took up thier spanners and were followed in the trade by thier sons and daughters these nicely engineered bikes should not be in a pre 65 british bike trial

I have a very nice very early montesa (72) that rides much smoother than my humble ( but heavily modified) cub and i know which i would ride if i had to win..

The Scottish Pre 65 2 day event is not restricted to British bikes only as the intention of this event was to creat a feel of the SSDT pre 65 and foreign bikes were part of the scene pre65. It would be a shame if these so called foreign bikes (let's face it they are all foreign from a Scotish point of view)were not allowed as they add much flavor and interest to the trial.

I am waiting for the day that sombody tries to ride the Scotish Pre 65 2 day on a Lambretta!
