social climber
Hi all, I was on this a while ago asking for general info on the 1993 Aprilia 280R Climber (purple tank, yellow radiator shrouds). Now I'll be more specific. Looking at the forks, theres a couple of screws on the top and I was wondering what sort of adjustment was available on these forks and which adjuster is which? Theres also an adjuster on the left hand fork but not on the right. Which is which? Also, same question for the shock.........
stuessenhigh
I dont believe it!!!! There is someone else with the same bike!!...I'm trying to help my dad fix up a 1993 280 CLimber....ALSO purple and yellow colour. Sorry I can't help you...but I will be eagerly awaiting any advice you get. ALSO...I want to ask you... I;ve been told it is 1,400cc of gearbox oil, (which sounds alot to me),,and 260cc of oil in each fork. DO you know if that is correct. AND...better still, do you know where I could get an owner/instruction manual. I've tried but can't get one. Thanks in advance for any help
social climber
The limited amount of info I got off the web agrees that 1,400cc for the gear box is correct. I didn't hear any thing about the fork oil, but given that USD forks generally hold more oil I would reckon that'd be a ball park figure alright. As for an owners manual, I have had no luck yet but a guy on this list, Tim Seymour sent me this in reply to the same question..... "Its not easy to find stuff like that.I had to call my local kawasaki dealer who also do aprilia. They gave me the number of a dealer in Kent.I cant find his number now but kawasaki newcastle is 0191 2723335.They will give you his number.Ask for the aprilia off road bloke in kent.Other wise its almost imposible to get hold of any info off the web.Any Trials bike dealer near to you SHOULD help, but dont bank on it!" One of my mates is a specialist trials bike mechanic here in N.Ireland, and has a dealership for sherco's. The distributer he gets his parts from also used to sell the climbers so he reckons they'll still have parts. I'll try and get their name from him and see if this might help. Good luck
t-shock 250
950cc for the gearbox oil, 1.4ltr was for the wider cases fitted to the older air cooled motors.

social climber
Glad to hear that theres a response to some points raised here...... however, none of them have been about my original query! Guys, I weigh 112kg( ), I NEED advice on suspension adjustment......
t-shock 250
UPDATE, the older style large capacity gearbox required 1200cc of oil. I have the Rotax manual here in front of me. From 1988 onwards (TXR, CLIMBER) these had slimmed down cases which held less oil, between 900cc & 1Ltr, not more than 1 Ltr. I owned these models and remember they were very well built, far better quality than Spanish crap from the same era.
social climber
Thanks t-shock, I'll be doing an oil change on mine soon so this will be usefull to know. Apologies to anyone I mis-led with my 1400cc crazy talk...... I got that info from a Japanese site that listed aprilia's from 1988 on, air and water cooled, and this site listed the same specs for all of them.... should have known really. As a side note, does anyone know where I could get short levers (brake and clutch) for this. The levers are madeby domino and I presume they haven't changed THAT much have they? lineaway
the manual states 1400cc dry and 1000cc with a oil change. the little scew in the clutch cover case is your oil level check. when drainig it`s the allan bolt. Never remove the 17mm head bolt directly under the clutch cover. (it holds the kickstarter mechanism in place) 260cc each fork. 5w spring side 20wt hydralic side.yes there was an excact measurement also ,but can`t place it. rear shock, the knob on the resivoir is compression, the one at the linkage side is rebound. can`t recall the fork adjustments as they seemed to change each year. Yellow fenders were a 92 model and white were 93.(the 90 model also had white fenders ,but not the checker board design on the tank)
t-shock 250
The '90 model had a white front mudguard and a lilac rear. Like this. Edited February 17, 2004 by t-shock
stuessenhigh
Thanks everyone....its great to see all these posts about the Climber...although it seems like a heavy old lump to me now..there is still something that I really like about it. t-shock....thanks for all your help. I'm wondering if you could tell me where I could get that Rotax manual.....OR....(and I know I shouldn't say this)...if you were willing to photocopy it, I would pay you for a copy.......which in the interests of copyrights, I would obviously destroy after I have learned a few bits that I need!!!!! mattylad
Contact Malcolm Rathmell Sport, they had a few copies and gave me one a while ago. As the former importers they also have a good knowledge and used to carry a good stock of spares.
t-shock 250
Peter Knight, (the Rotax man) 0176 1414106 You can get copies of engine manuals from him.
terry
My friend has a 88 or 89, I forget, 240 climber and I worked on it recently for him. His has the upside down forks and I replaced seals for him. The forks used different weight oil, one side was 7 wt and the other 20 wt. I contacted Mike Komer and he had all the information I needed and was very helpful. I got the seals and some other parts from him. I understand he used to be the US importer for Aprilia and still has parts. Here is a link to his page: http://www.tryalsshop.com/
