mich lin
Considering the world and US championship sections that Bernie, Marland and Curt Comer rode back in the 70's were no harder than intermediate sections today, as some have claimed. It's amazing that Curt beat everyone at the US Sportsmen nationals. Either he has improved a bunch since then, or perhaps Bernie, Marland and Curt were not such bad riders after all back in the 70s? mich lin
Yes, it has been said here that the sections Bernie, Marland and Curt rode at nationals and world championship were as easy as club sections today! I won't name names but they know who they are! That's part of the reason I rode Intermediate class on my 77 Bultaco recently, to show that I could win on it today agaisnt modern bikes and riders. Imagine how much harder the sections Bernie, Marland and Curt rode on that bike in 1977, when they were young, in shape and training everyday! brian r
That's not the same thing as saying they are bad riders is it? Just that WR sections used to be easier. That's the way I read it. Don't mind me though, I stink as a rider, just love the sport! Just guessing I'd say the sections were closer to hard Advanced/ easy Expert in the STRA. BTW, Curt is kicking posterior. And Clive is too. Why don't you ride against them on a modern bike, Lane? Wouldn't that be fun? Do you ride any of the AHRMA events?
mich lin
Brian, I can't ride worth a hoot anymore since shattering my let in 99! I did win the AHRMA national title in 2004 and riding modern trials on my vintage Bultaco was part of my trianing for that title. I do believe that I could win on an Advanced class level anywhere in the USA on my vintage 77 Bultaco. Sadly the bike cannot be replaced and riding advanced class sections in SoCal takes its toll on equipment, it's rocky and cobby here. After a few trials the old Bultaco would be scrap metal competing at that level here, like most modern bikes are as well. I did plan a comeback to US sportsmen competion this year. My plan was simple, ride and train for the US Pro championship in 2005. That would prepare me for the 55 year old sportsmen class in 2006, which I believe I could have won! Those plans were dashed however, so I lost interest in NATC trials altogether after that. My overall US Pro class standings for 2005 would have been national #7 if I would have been allowed to continue to ride the championship. The powers that be decided that they didn't want me contesting the US Pro title. So now I simply spectate and comment from the sidelines. I leave the riding to you guys. Go get em, tiger! brian r
Lane, I'll never even be as good as to be called a bad rider. I wish I could have started young and could have been better but that didn't happen. Truth is any one could have clamed #7 pro if they were allowed to ride. The rules didn't allow that. We have a guy in our club that did the same thing a couple of years back but he didn't really expect national ranking out of it, just to prove a point. He did ride the whole day and attempted every section too. I just would like to see you as a multi time US champ riding in the NATC SR 55 class. Curt is riding this year SR 45, he never has a negative thing to say, he scored a section for at least 2 days at the US World Round. Not easy to do after 2 good friends got hurt there (section 15) in two separate accidents on the same day. I'd like to see all the past champs compete though. You'll have to ride a 125 though
