Summer finally arrived, well at least in North Derbyshire, where the YMSA welcomed over 70 entries at the 3rd round of their 2016 championship. This was held at the little used Foxholes venue at Tansley near Matlock. As usual 12 sections were set out with the adult experts and youth A competitors riding 3 laps of the principal route. Youth B, together with adult inters rode three laps of these sections with some variations. White green and orange routes were marked out easier for the rest of the youth entry together with the older riders who missed out the harder sections in the rocky stream but were give 4 laps.
The adult expert entry was quite small in numbers but high in quality topped by Jack Price following his stunning rides at world level in Japan recently. The A class youth entry was also low but the two contenders for the title, Jack Biggins and Oliver Smith went head to head again. A similar situation occurred in B class where current champion Daniel Slack was opposed by Mitch Brightmore and Jack Buckley, with Jack Dance working hard riding up a route on his 80 Beta.
C class saw the local rivals, Harry Turner and Ash Brightmore competing with George Clarke for the podium places. Pleasing to see in D class the next generation of two of the regular YMSA families, George Bowyer and Max Dance ride the event together with respective mums Kate and Nicky minding for them – girl power is coming through !!
An unusual coincidence, Mark Hallows and son Ash, riding together on twinshocks, both suffering punctures on the same lap. Consensus from many riders that the sections generally than at the previous event was borne out by the scores, probably due to the facts that Foxholes is so little used that many of the sections were green particularly in the rocky areas.
The A class saw the continuing battle for honours go the way of Oliver Smith on his prototype Sherco/Oset. This will go down to the wire at season's end. Mitch Brightmore won the B class on a tie break from Daniel Slack ending Daniel’s unbeaten run this season. A marginally better score on section 6 with Daniel struggling to get between a tree and a slab to get up a step costing him two fives and a three to Mitch’s 4 all day. Harry Turner, riding his small wheel Beta won C class by a by a single mark from Ash Brightmore on his standard wheel bike. Yet another class which is going to be tight to the end of the year. The D class saw the future talents of Max Dance and George Bowyer trading places all day with young Max coming out ahead by 30 marks in a very tough trial. Alice Minta continued her unbeaten run in youth novice by a clear margin from Charlie Bawden and Sam Land.
The adult expert saw Jack Price just edging Tom Minta for the win with Brad Bullock a distant third. Adult inters went the way of Tony Buckley from John Cowley who just edged David Greaves for 2nd place on a tie break. Series leader Jamie Millers finished off the podium in 4th place.
The adult novice class was won by Chris Brightmore from Leicester veteran Ian Margetts with Mick Gregory in 3rd place. Mark Hallows hung on for the win on the green route despite a puncture from Matt Ramsey who just held off Ben Burton who stopped in section 9 incurring a five thinking his chain had come off – not true – big mistake! Losing bragging rights to big sister’s boyfriend who consequently beat him by 4 marks. Congratulations to the
Brightmore family with all 3 members on the podium in their respected classes, a rare and unusual feat.
