The YMSA held the final round of their 2016 trials championship at Dudwood farm last Sunday, on a typical November day that started bright and sunny, followed by heavy showers. With all six rounds to count in the championship the silverware was still up for grabs going in to the final round.
The trial consisted of ten sections to be ridden four times, the first five were in the top wood over the big rocks and tree roots, the final five sections followed the rocky stream up the valley. Clerk of the course Barry Burton had set the sections for the forecast dry weather and when the heavens opened the scores rocketed.
The A class has seen a yearlong battle between Jack Biggins and Oliver Smith. Oliver won the battle of the final round but Jack was crowned champion after the six rounds. The most difficult section for the A class runners was number eight, the famous triple rock steps out of the stream, It remained unconquered all day with Oliver coming the closest on his final lap, just slipping back off the top step.
B class saw a final round win and championship victory for Dan Slack followed by Mitch Brightmore and Jack Dance. The trial was won and lost on the difficult tenth section, a twisting climb over boulders followed by steep slippery bank to the ends cards with Dan dropping only three marks to Mitch’s fifteen and Jack’s eighteen.
C class saw an easy win by Ash Brightmore followed by George Clarke. The title had already been wrapped up at the previous round by Harry Turner who chose to ride up a route for the final round.
D class saw another win for Max Dance who also won the title and claimed the silver cup that was nearly as big has him !
Youth novice was won by George Mallion followed by Frankie eEey who had travelled north for a taste of some Derbshire rockery. The title went to Elizabeth Tett who was at the women’s national on the day
Adult inter saw a close contest with the win going to Harry Coleman followed by Mark Shaw and Rob Bunting, the championship having already been won by Jamie Millers
The adult novice class saw another victory for Leicestershire veteran Ian Margetts who also won the title to add to his never ending list. He was followed home on the day by Chris Brightmore and Steve Clarke with big Nick Humphries missing out on a podium on the tie-break, but this was enough for runner up spot in the championship.
The green route was won by Ash Hallows on a nice twinshock Honda but it was Ben Burton who clinched the championship with runner up spot in the final round.
