Red Rose Classic MCC had the perfect antidote to the Christmas excesses when they hosted their annual charity fun trial. And what better way to work off the turkey and mince pies than four laps of ten sections at the popular Copy Pit venue at Cliviger, near Burnley.
The club were rewarded with a great entry of 69 riders with several new faces eager to try out the sections laid out by Adrian Thompson and Robin Morten. Top scorer was Tony Calvert, who dropped just four marks on his way to winning C on his Cub, nine clear of runner-up Pete Clibburn, also Cub-mounted. Former world champion Yrjo Vesterinen was in fine form too on his Bultaco, finishing on nine marks to claim class T, but runner-up Mick Clarke and third-placed Robin Luscombe didn’t make it easy for Vesty, ending the day right behind on 11 and 12 marks respectively.
Clear winner in class Te was Stewart Procter (Montesa) who finished on 12, exactly half the penalties incurred by runner-up Paul Charnley (Yamaha). Jake Ingram topped class A on his BSA, while Mark Newman (Ariel) did the same on the clubman route.
With 19 riders contesting class Ce, Maurice Brayford had to work hard for his victory dropping seven marks – all on section five – to beat Mick Whitlow on his Cub.
Red Rose would like to thank the landowner, the clerks of the course, Adrian Thompson and Robin Morten, and the observers. The first round of the club championship is on Sunday, January 15 at Float Bridge, near Nelson. Nearest postcode is BB10 3RE.
