Whilst Yorkshire Classic’s Premier Event, The Captain’s Trial, had been moved from its original March date the weather had not improved with heavy rain welcoming the riders to the Castle Carr Estate. With a number of non-starters, 100 riders braved the elements to battle their way around 3 laps of 15 sections carefully prepared by Colin and Tim Pawson and Pete Baldwin.
After a gentle uphill starter, the Premier riders were faced with their biggest mark-taker, a steep up hill start and awkward turn into what turned out to be a very long muddy gully, with only 6 individual cleans recorded all day. Best here was eventual winner, Paul Dennis losing a single mark, with John Maxfield on 2 and Roy Palmer on 3. Second placed, Paul Preston lost 4 of his 5 marks here. For the Clubmen, section 3, the long narrow uphill gulley had been eased to allow use of the banking for the first half with 9 riders going clean with top Clubman Steve Thomas losing 1 of his 2 mark score.
